At the last Council meeting Councillors voted to Participate in Bicycle NSW’s Student Bicycle Licence Scheme and work with local schools within the local government area on its uptake. This program was to apparently cost the Council approximately $3,500.
In an inexplicable move, three Councillors, who have previously expressed concern at Council meetings about the dangerous behaviour of teenagers on ebikes, have submitted a notice to rescind the resolution and offered this alternative.
*In the interests of transparency, good governance and noting that another organisation is already running a similar program for free in the Sutherland Local Government Area, for free, (sic) that Council calls for expressions of interest and report the matter back to Council in September. The matter will be included in the 19 August 2025 Ordinary Council meeting agenda.
The program referred to in the Notice to Rescind is a two hour online course with 100% pass required. Instead of a certificate students at Cronulla High were issued personalised licence plates to be displayed on the rear of their ebikes. This course was developed by two Sutherland Shire locals and was not cost free.
